I HATE GoDaddy Hosting! Here are 3 reasons why.

Update 2015: I have to show GoDaddy a little respect. From the time I wrote this to now, they’ve really be making long strides and improving their service a lot, from hosting and even to support.  At this point, I think this post is more entertaining then anything. Take it with a grain of salt.

Do you host with GoDaddy?  If you do, you need to stop.  It is the worst hosting platform/interface/service I’ve ever used.  I’ve been creating websites for over 8 years now, and I’ve never gotten more angry then with sites hosted on GoDaddy!  Here’s my list:

1. I can’t find anything!

The GoDaddy interface is the most disgusting/confusing interface ever.  Did you get a domain, or hosting, or 1 of their other 100 services?  There’s an admin screen for everything!! Domain Management, Hosting Management, Email Management, Deluxe Hosting Management, DNS Management, blah, blah, blah, and the list goes on.

Real World Example:

Trying to move my clients WordPress site to my server.  I have to back up the WordPress Database.  Can’t find PHP MySQL.  Oh, I found it, under Hosting Management, then clicked a button called options, then went to the hosting control center, then looked for databases drop down, clicked manage database.  I need a user name and PW.  I tried the one I logged in with…WRONG! OK… I see the username field, wtf is the pw?  Oh silly me, I have to create a new pw from a tiny little icon on the top that says pw in about a size 8 font.  Just incase you’re not sure what a size 8 font is, it looks like this.

I can go on with different stories of how their user interface has screwed me up, but another time.

2. I get nothing but problems

I use WordPress a lot.  I build other sites as well with databases.  I always seem to get issues that never occur anywhere else.  Just random errors pop up.  Page not found, fatal errors, database errors.  No rhyme or reason, I’ll test everything on my local server and even my host, everything works fine, but on GoDaddy Hosting…FAIL!

Real World Example:

Trying to install a plugin on my clients website to back it up to move it.  FATAL ERROR!  Can’t fix it. I’ll upgrade WordPress to the latest version. ERROR!  Apparently he has an old version of PHP that you have to pay for to upgrade.

I download a site, pretty large site (social network), keeps timing out.  I had to download in piece meal, took me forever.

3. Customer Support is a Joke

When I call customer support on a service that a company offers, I expect some knowledgeable people. Not with GoDaddy.  I’m pretty sure they just hire people who can read a candid response of answers.

Real World Example:

I need to change an A Record for a client but they have all of their emails hosted with GoDaddy (about 50).  In GoDaddy’s DNS the A Record is “linked” with all the mx records, and such.  I need to figure out a way to do this without affecting the emails.

Conversation went a little like this:

Customer Support: Hi this is GoDaddy, blah blah, can I help you?

Me: Yes hi, I’m actually looking to see how I can add or change the A record for my client who has about 50 emails set up without actually affecting the emails.

Customer Support: … Is there a problem with the site?

Me: No, I just need to know how I can do that.

Customer Support: So what are you trying to do, something with an A? record? (purposely put two question marks to imply the lady had no idea what I was talking about)

GoDaddy is good at one thing only, to buy domains from.  If you need a domain, yes, go to GoDaddy.  But if you’re looking for anything else, please save your money and go to an actual hosting company.  I’ll be more than happy to recommend a few.

Hosting Recommendations

Based on more experience and a few suggestions from the comments, if you’re looking for a new host, here are a few suggestions:

  • WPEngine (aff link) – Possibly the best WordPress host out there. It’s a little expensive but once you have an account, it’s totally worth the money. Here’s a write-up I did about it: WordPress Hosting Tips and WPEngine Review
  • Ace Net Hosting – I use them on the regular. The service is great, cPanel is really easy. Just overall good, I never had any issues, at all, ever.
  • BlueHost – I never tried them but I’m hearing a few good things. I can personally say they are good or bad, but if you’re looking to try something out, why not.

  1. I have never experienced so many hosting service failures on every level of paid service than with GoDaddy. Never, ever. We use WordPress, keep all updates installed and it still times out and does not display the web pages. I will be moving all my shared Windows hosting accounts as soon as this season is finished. Totally trash hosting service and embarrassing media commericals.

    1. Jonathan says:

Agreed! Do you know where you’ll be going, I can definitely offer suggestions!

  2. Greg Wallace says:

I couldn’t agree more. The admin interface is horrid. It follows no logical order. The servers are never kept up to date on their Winblows Servers. Try getting a backup restored, it will take at least 5 support requests and days to get done. Try downloading or restoring a site without errors or timeouts, good luck!

I am a pretty mellow guy and they are the only hosting company to ever piss me off. So much so, I was seriously contemplating building a site just to promote and Anti-Goddady agenda.

Since then, I always add 25% to any job I do involving a Godaddy site.

It’s been a couple months since my last nightmare with them, but I still get mad thinking about it.
    Thanks for letting me rant.

    1. Jonathan says:

Wow Greg, that’s actually not a bad idea, adding %25. I usually just try to steer them into getting me to host it, I’m 80% successfull, plus I get residual =)

  3. Chris Cree says:

I thought GoDaddy was the worst hosting ever (and they are crazy bad in my opinion too). But I recently had to do some work on a client site on 1and1. If it’s possible, their hosting is even worse than GD.

That said, I refuse to give GoDaddy any more of my money. Between their sleazy ads, upsell hell purchase process, elephant hunting, and SOPA shadiness I’ve had more than enough. I get my domains elsewhere now too.

    1. Jonathan says:

Hey Chris, where do you get your domains from? I’ll be honest I only use GoDaddy for domains and haven’t really risked venturing out.

  4. Tamara says:

Don’t buy your domain names from GoDaddy because if you ever have to transfer them out of Godaddy it is a nightmare.

    1. Jonathan says:

Yeah, I’ve experience that first hand! What do you recommend?

  5. Sam says:

Which web hosting do recommend since I read your comments about godaddy’s web hosting service?

    1. Jonathan says:

Honestly, I host all of the sites I create, so I would recommend ME!! =D But if not, host gator is supposed to be real good. If you want high-end premium quality hosting, then I would say media-temple and web sythesis, but those get expensive.

  6. ScoDal says:

I love the interface and find everything very easy. Everything I upload and install just works. My sites never go down for more than about 10 minutes a year. If I call about a problem it’s usually fixed before the person gets on the phone and I just say nevermind bye. They have awesome tech support that is always there and pleasant. I’ve worked with so many hosting companies and none are perfect but I’ve had my GoDaddy for 10 years now. Love it and disagree with you

  7. Sahil says:

I am so glad I am not the only one trying to convince clients that GoDaddy is shit…!! I have gone through everything you mentioned up there, but there are a few more issues that bug the F out of me everytime I hear the words “I host with GoDaddy”.

    – First thing i do to check on a maintenance or upgrade job is set up FTP access. First of all choosing a username is a pain in the ass because apparently they check for FTP users across all of their hosting. WTF!! So, if I have 50 clients with GoDaddy hosting, I need a different username. DOn’t know if I am the only one with this issue, but half the time I give up trying to get FTP access.
    – Then comes the point of putting up a simple wordpress site up, the speed is so S**t, I have E-commerce websites with 17,000+ products run faster on HostGator than a simple 5 page wordpress site.

So, in most cases, i upload the site to GoDaddy, tell the client that its not gonna run fast. They don’t listen at first, then they realize that its shit so they end up hosting with me.

PS: I would recommend them for Domain Registration though. Just coz they are usually reliable. But, if you need hosting, you rather build your own server from scratch then to host with them.

  8. Carrie says:

Yeah, they are frustrating. I moved my own site away earlier this year, but still have several clients hosting with them. Who would you recommend for domain registration? I will not use Network Solutions, Sam I Am.

    1. Jonathan says:

Yeah, network solutions is definitely horrible. They actually “HOLD” your domain when you search for one to use. I haven’t had issues in regards to domain registration for GoDaddy, but I’m actually getting into the domain game myself so if not them, I’d use me =). I don’t really know many others (or have a valid opinion on there services).

    2. Jennifer says:

Try Bluehost! I really can’t say enough about how great they are! Their support team is by far the best!

      1. Jonathan says:

Ooo, I found and honestly, I don’t think I’ll look back… I have heard good things about Bluehost though. I’m going to add some recommendations to the end of the post =) Thanks for the comments!!

  9. goMommy says:

Even a simple thing as a domain renewal is a hustle! My domain expired and it takes a 3 weeks to renew with godaddy! Don’t get me wrong I’ve been in the business for 5 years and still recall when it was an ok registrar.

  10. Recently, I had to migrate a WP site to client’s server and I was lost! I had to wait for about 24hours. First, the hosting account was being “setup”, second, after the account was setup I can’t do anything until “DNS propagation” had completed!
It doesn’t allow to upload files or database during that period! crazy!

  11. Wat says:

I’m sure the customer support rep got confused because you called in about Email and you brought up modifying the A record in the zone file which has nothing to do with email .. Maybe I you worded your question a little clearer by asking how to modify the mx records u wouldn’t have gotten such a dumbfounded response from the support rep.

  12. Jennifer says:

I too hate GoDaddy! They have the slowest servers! I personally use and they rock! 24/7 customer support by US citizens. I can add a domain to my hosting account within 30 seconds and populate it with WordPress within 1 minute and I’m ready to go! I am currently waiting for GoDaddy to setup an account and upload WordPress. I’ve been waiting 1 hour and it can take up to 24 hours! What a joke! Their cpanel has changed but it still sucks! Thanks for hosting this blog! I got to rant about something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time! And what the heck are they selling? Sex? Football? I wish someone would hack their servers with some nasty virus!

    1. Jonathan says:

LoL, love it! =) Their marketing is really terrible…

  13. Daren says:

I only use Godaddy for domain purchases as well. they always have coupons!

For hosting I use Bluehost and love them. Great customer support and access to cPanel. They have been an exclusive shared hosting company, but they are going to launch a VPS option soon. plus they are local to my home state of Utah.

  14. Boomer says:

I wish I came across this post before joining GoDaddy. I’ve been with them for 4 weeks and only had problems – extra slow page loading time, white page of death on WordPress, site not accessible for 20 hours…. When it looks like sh*t and smells like sh*t, it’s probably sh*t.

I’m now moving to BlueHost and will hopefully forget all about Go Daddy soon – Domain Registration included.

  15. Rudd says:

I got a bad experience with Godadddy hosting too from my latest customer. I need to migrate his website from blogspot to WordPress. I have done that many times. But with Godaddy, it was a terrible a experience. I need to move the website and use the domain as an addon domain. First, it took hours figuring out how to use addon domain with Godaddy hosting. I’ve been using Cpanel for years and it’s really easy to add another domain. However, in Godaddy, it’s much different. I’ve to manually created a folder for the domain and sort of other things.

When I emailed them for ask, not helpful at all. They simply send me a link to the FAQ page which I already read. I think they’re all robot, not really human. After this, I might ask my clients first whether they use Godaddy hosting. If possible, I won’t take the job or ask them to move to a better hosting.

  16. Ugh! I came across this post searching for something else and had to weigh in, too. Amen to all 3 of your points. Also, if GoDaddy would kindly stop sending my clients notices that they have a file ready to be updated and stop sending them into a frenzied panic because the email looks like a warning, I’d be so, so happy. I have people come to me with pre-existing GD accounts and I got tired of trying to figure it out for them so I got a damn domain there just to see how the hell it works. I’m canceling, though.

And Chris Cree – thanks so much for bringing up their sleazy ads! My number one issue with them is their objectification of women. It’s just foul and I can’t stand the idea that I actually gave them any of my hard-earned cash.

  17. bart says:

Indeed… godaddy is PAIN in the ASS! I’ve slowly transfer all my hostings from godaddy to small but RELIABLE hosting company.

  18. Kerry Voss says:

I hate them too my pet pev is the password rules ok WTF has to start with a letter and have a special charachter and this and that by the time your done the password is no longer your password but one they made up. Yike enogh with the rant have many more but finally moved to and they serve me well support knows what goes on and fixes my boo boo’s all the time. give them a try really good prices think 3.25 a month is what I pay alot less than godaddy with all there dang upsales.

  19. martin says:

godaddy has gone from brilliant to un-usable on all operating systems and devices
the website must the worst in the world
    what where they thinking
    it sucks big time
you cant even send them an email
i can not tell you how bad it is
but take a look you will soon move to other hosting

  20. Lysander says:

Your “update” notwithstanding, GoDaddy still is a horrible hosting service for most of the reasons you listed, especially (so called) Customer Service. They also make it extremely difficult (within the regulations) to transfer OUT of GoDaddy by changing the payment to “AUTO”, thereby freezing the Protection, which cannot be removed if the domain fee is due within 30 days of the transfer request. Plain and simple: They’re a bunch of sleaze balls.

  21. James says:

I too hate go daddy. Call number. Wait on hold for @ 10 minutes of commercials. Talk to an imbicile. Add web address. NO HELP RESOLVING ORIGINAL PROBLEM. Blood pressure rises. NO assistance. Hang up phone. waste of time. F’ing incredible. cocksuckers make money had over fist.

    1. Jonathan Perez says:

Yeah, it can definitely be a pain. They’re trying to make strides with their WordPress side though. If you need help hosting a site, let me know, we offer hosting too! 🙂

  22. Blake says:

agreed. i purchased from godaddy. sometime its says; resource limit. i dont why; i bought resource core-2, ram-1GB; IO-2500 . but dont why this happen. should go to other host service ? but i have no idea about this. 🙁

    1. Jonathan Perez says:

1000% You should look into LiquidWeb. I’ve had it for almost a year, I’ve never had a better host. If you don’t want to deal with managing it yourself, shoot me an email, we help quite often with hosting.

  23. Neelam says:

Kindly never buy go daddy hosting. They are just like big frauds and treat people so badly that u can’t imagine. I just bought go daddy hosting and they advertised wrongly too. At the end they billed you lot.
My main concern is that I couldn’t even imagine that they will not provide me any access to customer support. Telephone number is from UK now imagine how much difficult is to call from Pakistan to UK. No chat option, no email support address. And they just emailed that we need to verify your account and when u will sign up a form will prompt up and u just fill and provide the documents. When I tried to login no form but just they blocked me. I replied back several times to the same email I received but every time automated same reply. Just imagine nobody there bothers to read emails. I have never seen even a single website including PayPal which dont allow you to login to your account when they need to verify your account.
At last I dialed a super expensive call and when I shouted the representative gave me an email I told them that kindly tell me how I can upload documents when there is no form. The matter was serious and they just replied automated same email. Nobody reads your emails.

Now I am just a new customer my nerves are fully stressed and I don’t know any way to contact them. I can’t ask for refund, I can’t upload documents because I have no way they reply my emails. Also they are asking me to upload my card. And the hosting quality is that I cannot even upload the yoast seo plugin. Rest of hosting quality I don’t know as they entangled me in non issues.

My advice is that no matter how good the product or service is but if customer service doesn’t exist never ever go for that product or service. Always prefer good quality customer service even if the stuff is mediocre.

  24. Dave Cordero says:

Ridiculous service, I hired an SSL Certificate for a year and I share the following:

1- it was renewed without requesting it
2- when I try to cancel the product I find the surprise that there is the option “Cancel account”, however the system does not work:
3 I have been automatically deducted from my bank account the annuity of a service that I do not require and with which I am very dissatisfied.
4- I am forced to pay a call outside of my country to talk to a representative that this company does not offer an email or a chat where to serve their customers.

I recommend GoDaddy clients: there are better SSL options cheaper and with better customer service.
