Maybe a few years ago you would have immediately answered, yes of course I do.
As a matter of fact, that is what I answered, and that’s why I became one, but as the Internet evolves, I’m not sure if I chose correctly.
What’s the point of web design?
In order to understand the need of a designer, you need to understand what the job of a designer is. From what I’ve experienced throughout the years, web designers fall into different categories.
Art Designer – These are designers that are good at art. They can draw, they can put amazing graphics together, and they make things look nice.
Layout Designer – These are the types of designers who may not be so artsy, but have an eye for they way things should be laid out. For example typography, shapes, content, things like that. They are generally good at utilizing space.
Content Designer – Not really into shapes, colors, etc., but they keep things very simple and focused on content. They know what words to say, and what to place where.
Now all of these designer types are good in they’re own respect, but they all server a similar purpose. That purpose is to communicate the solution of a problem through there design. Knowing one of these skills is good, but combining them together, they provide the necessary tools to produce a website that will get you results.
You’ll learn more about these in the PWDC by Ben Hunt. He actually takes the core functions of design, simplifies it, and get’s you on track to creating websites that work, I won’t get into that now though.
Do you want to do it yourself?
First see if you have a passion for it. It’s a lot more then just slapping shapes together. You need to understand who you’re designing for, what you’re designing, and why you’re designing it.
You also need a graphics program that you will have to learn, and you will also need to know some code.
There are a lot of different steps. Once you learn them, you will definitely feel rewarded, but it’s not something you learn over night. Similar to artists, Professional designers have taken years to hone there skills and make it a craft.
It’s unfortunate that many people with no experience can start calling themselves designers and tricking people into thinking that what they say is right. It’s a battle that we as professionals have face for years!
But how do they do it? How can someone just start saying they are designers with no experience?
Many websites are already created!
Yes it’s true. There are many websites out there that have websites already made for you! All you have to do is buy them =). What many people do is they find these “template” websites and they say that they are creating a website for you, when really all they are doing is swapping content.
The sad thing is they charge a ton of money, and unless your actively online trying to look for these websites, you would never know.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying a template is a bad thing, on the contrary, I believe templates are a GREAT starting point. But I do believe that honesty is a duty of a web designer. Trying to say you’re creating a custom design and using a template is not ethical.
In any case, whether your a designer, developer, or business owner, you may be at a point where you’re looking to get a website but aren’t 100% sure on what to look for.
So here’s a list:
- Make sure you know what you’re paying for (custom, customized, or template)
- If you’re offering a template, let them know it’s a template
- Don’t use a template design and say you custom made it
